Phonics

Question of the day

Read the question above using the sound buttons to help you spot the digraphs/trigraph. Answer yes or no using thumbs up or thumbs down on hands. Can you challenge yourself to write an answer to the question using a full sentence?

Write Phase 3 digraphs/trigraphs (qu, ng, ch, sh, th, ee, ai, oa, oo, ar, igh) on small pieces of paper/post-it notes. Make sure to write each sound a different amount of times and hide around the house/garden.

Next, write a list of the digraphs/trigraphs to find on a piece of paper for your child to take around with them as they go on a hunt. As your child finds each sound, they can record the amount of times using a tally mark on the sheet. When they have found all the sounds, count the tally marks to find out which digraph has won!

If you’re not sure how to pronounce the sounds please see this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNcBWSBxSp0

Literacy

Start reading the story ‘The Cave’ (see a copy of the book in the Literacy folder). Pause after you have read ‘…because of a wolf’. Ask your child: Do you think the wolf is scary or friendly? Why? What other stories have a wolf in? Is the wolf in those stories good or bad?

Draw a picture of the wolf and write a sentence to describe what you think the wolf is like e.g. The wolf is scary and has sharp teeth. Remember to use finger spaces in between each word and use your sounds to help you write phonetically (see the Phase 3 sound mat and tricky word mats below for support).

We will continue reading the story tomorrow so keep it a surprise for your child for now. You might like to watch Author/Illustrator Rob Hodgson video of how to draw a wolf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9920SZNAFME

Challenge: To write a few sentences to describe the wolf. What does he look like? What does he like to eat?
