At Chevening, school uniform plays an important part in promoting our school identity as well as unifying appearance; our aim is for this to continue in ways that are affordable and accessible to all families, especially in the current economic circumstances but also into the future. School leaders consulted Chevening families about proposed changes and, following feedback, have extended the phasing-in period to support family budgets. The changes are our response to the DFE’s required review and reduce the number of logo-related items, without banishing Chevening's ‘heraldic dolphin fish’ to obscurity. Likewise, leaders have sought ways to respond to important points raised in feedback: durability, out-of-school use and commonality of colour.
Uniform can instil pride and purpose, as well as being practical for school-related activities. As the curriculum transforms from the initial play-based approach in EYFS to more formally preparing children for a variety of Secondary Schools, a progression in uniform helps to prepare children for change, enabling them to practice important life-skills and learn resilience, important elements of becoming Secondary-ready. Change needs to be practised and managed well; the extended phasing-in period has been introduced to support this. Likewise, time and support for developing these skills will be built into curriculum time.
The agreed changes are:
