Chesil beach
Chesil beach’s fantastic spit was formed over 5 thousand years old and is made up of a whopping 180 billon pebbles. It is often mega windy because of the south-westerly gales which can cause large waves.
Chesil beach is a beach barrier – a narrow beach laying parallel to the shoreline – believed to have been moved landwards by the sea. It is also a tombolo – where a spit has connected an island to a mainland – which is quite rare as spits themselves aren’t particularly common.
