There
are four houses at Chevening School. They are:
Churchill,
Stanhope,
Sackville and
Wolfe.
All of these houses are very
special to Chevening CEP School as it shows some of our rich history and
heritage. They have been named after famous people who lived in and around
Sevenoaks over the centuries.
Churchill has been named after Sir Winston Churchill, who as
Prime Minister, led Britain to victory in World War II. Click
to visit
The Churchill Centre and find out more about Sir Winston Churchill. You can
visit
Chartwell, the family home of Winston Churchill.
Sackville is named after the family who
live in Knole House. The house was presented to Thomas
Sackville by HRH Queen Elizabeth 1. Thomas was the Queen's cousin. You can find
out more from Wikipedia.
The Lady in the picture is Vita Sackville-West. She was a novelist and poet. You
can visit
Knole House via the National Trust.
Stanhope is named after the family who owned
Chevening House. Many of the
Stanhope
family were famous for different reasons. Pictured is the 7th Earl who gave
the house to the Nation. It is the unofficial residence of the Foreign Secretary
and was also home to HRH The Prince of Wales for a time. Lady Stanhope opened
the Swimming Pool at Chevening School. Chevening children are still fortunate to
benefit from the links with the Stanhope family.
Lastly, Wolfe is named after General Wolfe, who lived
just outside Sevenoaks in
Quebec House,
Westerham. James
Wolfe entered the army of the age of 14 and was involved in many campaigns;
the last of which was when he led 9000 troops in Quebec, Canada.
